Empowering local action for lasting environmental change
Message from the Chairman of Greener Ethiopia
“Greener Ethiopia Beyond Trees: Cultivating Human Capital”
For the past twenty-five years, Greener Ethiopia (GE) has been at the forefront of sustainable rural development. We have planted millions of trees, restored degraded lands, promoted sound land management, and introduced sustainable livelihood strategies for smallholder farmers. Through these efforts, we have empowered communities and witnessed both the challenges and triumphs of rural life.
But along this journey, we have also seen something deeply troubling—the neglect of those who serve others. Agricultural extension workers, health professionals, teachers, and civil servants are the backbone of rural development. These dedicated individuals work day and night in difficult conditions to improve the lives of Ethiopia’s rural poor. Yet, they are often underpaid, overlooked, and overburdened. Their tireless contributions receive little recognition, and their future prospects remain uncertain.
At Greener Ethiopia, we firmly acknowledge that we would not have accomplished so much without the help of these unsung heroes. Their selfless service has enabled us to reach farther, grow stronger, and deepen our impact.mWe believe it is time for a shift in national consciousness.
We are proud to launch a new initiative:
“Serving the Service Providers”
This campaign aims to honor, support, and empower the individuals who make sustainable development possible. We call on all segments of society—government institutions, civic organizations, religious institutions including mosques and churches, and the private sector—to take bold action to relieve the burden of these essential workers.
Our new mission is clear: Beyond Trees, Let Us Cultivate Our Human Capital
Let us plant seeds not only in the soil, but also in the hearts, hopes, and futures of those who serve Ethiopia with quiet dedication.
Together, let us build a Greener Ethiopia—for our land, and for the people who care for it.
Bedru Sultan, Founder and President
More Than Trees
The Human Spirit Behind Greener Ethiopia
Greener Ethiopia’s journey of planting over 40 million trees since 2001 is a powerful testament to the collective will of a diverse coalition. From the dedicated hands of local residents and extension workers to the guidance of government officials and the support of international philanthropists, every tree tells a story of unity and purpose. Journalists have captured its milestones, and researchers have documented its impact—ensuring the legacy of this reforestation movement is both seen and studied. Their shared commitment to restoring Ethiopia’s environment has left an indelible mark, making each contributor an unforgettable part of Greener Ethiopia’s ongoing story.
